The benefits of having a good home air conditioning system cannot be overstated. These units are your first line of defense against the heat of summer and provides your family with comfort that simply cannot be achieved with any other appliance in your home.
Quality air conditioners are sometimes not just appliances that make your family comfortable however, they can also sometimes save lives. Many areas of the country get dangerously hot and without an ability to cool the air inside a home, the temperatures can cause serious health issues. In these situations, an air conditioner may be the difference between life and death.
Types of Air Conditioning Units
There are four types of home air conditioning units that are generally purchased for home cooling:
Portable Air Conditioning Units
Portable air conditioners are smaller units that can be moved from room to room as needed. These units take in air from the room, cool it, and then directs it back into the room. There is an exhaust on the unit which pushes the warm air out and can be placed in a window to push that air outside of the room. Portable air conditioners are not very good at efficient cooling and can only be used to cool one smaller area room. However the fact that they are portable makes them attractive.
Window Air Conditioner
These are all in one units containing every part of the air conditioning system in a compact box that fits in a window. These units only cool one room and push warm air out the back of the unit and outside of the room. Window air conditioners are best for those who live in small spaces. They are not very efficient units and do not typically have the life-span of larger ductless and ducted units.
Ductless Air Conditioning Units
These air conditioning units have an outdoor compressor/condensor unit and a handling unit that sits in a room that pushes out cool air. Many utilize a multi-split system that allows for one compressor/condensor unit to service several handling units meaning you can cool several rooms at different temperatures, without having to purchase several separate units. These units are much more efficient than window or portable air conditioners.
Ducted Air Conditioners
A ducted air conditioner is often called a central air conditioner. They have a large compressor/condensor unit that sits on top of or outside the home that connects to a series of ducts that cools some or all areas of the home. Depending on the size of the home, there may be one or more of these units operating.
Ducted air conditioners supply the highest quality air conditioning and are the most common type of home cooling systems. Initial installation can be complicated and is often done when the home is built, but even if a home owner chooses to retrofit this type of system, they are rewarded with the best quality air conditioning available.
Today’s ducted units are programmable and can be operated with smartphones. They also offer long warranties and service contracts allowing homeowners to have a sense of comfort and security that their AC unit will be operating when needed.
The key is to engage a reputable company who can do an assessment of your cooling needs and then provide the right size and type of unit for your home.
