Given the cost involved in putting up a new roof; the materials, labor and the time it takes, many homeowners find it quite a hefty investment doing a new roof. However, there are things that would tell you whether it is repair or a new roof you need.
The age of the roof
Consider how long the asphalt shingle roof has been in existence. Experts agree that an ordinary roof would last for not more than thirty years. Again, just by looking at the roof from the outside, you’ll see the roof wear out with time.
If the shingles are buckling and curling
If the shingles are buckling or curling, it is a sign that you need a new roof. With time the at the side where the roof gets direct sunlight, the shingles begin to curl and lose granules. This could mean that they are past their life expectancy. You need a good contractor to do an assessment and make the necessary recommendations.
You may notice the roof shingles are falling apart or missing in some areas. This is a sure sign that you need a new roof. In fact, with a valley compromise, you will notice Ceiling Leakage in case of snow or rain.
In case of missing shingles
Check carefully if the roof shingles are intact. This is the roof support system and any weakness or disappearance could lead to falling off the roof. Immediately you notice such, it’s time to replace the roof.
Light through the roof boards
By walking on the roof, you may notice a spongy feel or trampoline bounce. And this would mean that the underlying decking is weak due to moisture. Check through the attic to see if there is any light coming through. If you see such a sign, you need a roof replacement.
Do not wait until the roof is damaged completely. You need some regular maintenance and repairs should be done promptly.
